Mission Statement

The Jacob J. Salazar Memorial Scholarship was created to honor Jacob’s life and to support Rio Grande High School graduates as they pursue their education at the University of New Mexico.

Jacob Salazar was the Salutatorian of the Rio Grande High School Class of 2015. A dedicated student-athlete, he worked tirelessly to balance the demands of academics and athletics, approaching every challenge with determination and joy. Jacob believed deeply in working hard while still embracing life, laughter, and the people around him. His dream was to attend the University of New Mexico and study Mechanical Engineering, a goal he began pursuing during his first semester at UNM.

Tragically, Jacob’s life was taken by a drunk driver on January 9, 2016. Though his time was far too short, his spirit, perseverance, and love for learning continue to live on.

Through this scholarship, Jacob’s family hopes to carry forward his legacy by encouraging Rio Grande students to set meaningful goals, work with purpose, and believe in their ability to achieve their dreams.
